Haa Alifu Atoll
The northernmost atoll of the Maldives is approximately 280 km from Malé and has a special historical meaning to the Maldivian people. Here lies the birth island of the national hero Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu (1573-1585). He was directly responsible for the emancipation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule.
The Haa Alifu atoll, with its capital Dhidhoo, has an estimated population of 15,000, who live on the 16 inhabited islands. 24 further islands in the atoll are uninhabited.
