The Republic of Maldives is made up of 26 coral atolls, which are divided into 1.196 individual islands situated in the Indian Ocean. The islands are in the formation of a "pearl necklace" and are located about 700 kilometres south-southwest of India.

The capital city is Malé, situated in the South Malé Atoll  with approx. 150.000 inhabitants. The total land area is about 300 km2. The complete area of the Republic of Maldives consists of about 90.000 km2. The combined total coastline of all the islands is approximately 644 km.

General Health

The Maldives are considered a very safe country for tourists, and usually there is no need to visit the in-house Resort physician during your stay. Yellow fever inoculation is prescribed if someone is coming from an infected area. Malaria does not represent a danger in the Maldives and thus there are no inoculation regulations.

Suggestions for the personal travel pharmacy would include a broad-spectrum antibiotic, nose drops, commercial pain tablets, SPF 30 sunscreen, and a skin desinfectant.

It′s recommended that snorkelers and divers should bring antibiotic ear drops! The waters are teeming with plankton, and those with sensitive ears are particularly susceptible to ear infections. Regular rinsing of the ears with fresh water can prevent possible infection. It′s recommended that you get a full health check-up in order to obtain a dive-sport Physician′s Certificate. New and beginning divers will be made aware of any problems concerning ear equalization.

The Weather

The Maldives have year-round constant temperatures, owing to their proximity to the equator, with a maximum of 31-36ºC and minimum 23-26ºC. The climatic air humidity (80%) and water temperature (28-29ºC) also remain constant throughout the year.

In the Maldives hot and tropical climate prevails. There are two Monsoons: the southwest monsoon from May to October, and the northeast monsoon from November to April. The southwest monsoon normally brings windy and rainy weather in June and July. However, these rainy periods have arrived rather late over the last several years. Unfortunately, this makes precise weather predictions difficult. During the rainy season the days often begin very bright and sunny, but the afternoons become progressively cloudy, and in  the late afternoon or evening it can rain quite violently. The best vacation period normally is between the months of November and April. The temperatures may fall at night, but rarely under 25ºC. The Maldives have the ideal tropical maritime climate, with a generally pleasant environment and consistent water temperatures.
